Battle of Uedahara
The battle of Uedahara (February 14, 1548), in the Shinano Province, was the first battle when Takeda Shingen was defeated and possibly more important, it was the first field battle in Japan at which firearms were used. This was the battle that lead to the arming of Japan and eventually the military establishment that started World War II in the Pacific. Takeda Shingen (December 1, 1521 – May 13, 1573) of Shinano and Kai Provinces, was a feudal lord with military importance who sought for the control of Japan in the late stage of Sengoku or "warring states" period. Takeda Shingen met up with his force that had taken Shika castle, and led 7000 men north to face Murakami Yoshikiyo. Shingen's vanguard was led by Itagaki Nobukata; when they charged head-on into Murakami's vanguard, the charge was absorbed, and Itagaki killed. Murakami made use of 50 ashigaru (conscripted foot-soldiers) armed with Chinese arquebuses. The he arquebus (sometimes spelled harquebus) is named from the Dutch word 'haakbus', meaning "hook gun" is an early muzzle-loaded rifle used from the 15th to 17th centuries. The ashigaru were meant to serve as support for archers. In all, 700 of Takeda's men were killed, including Itagaki, and two other generals, Amari Torayasu and Hajikano Den'emon. Shingen himself even suffered a spear wound to his side. |
